Diabetes is a medical condition that affects millions of people all over the world. It is an incurable disease that afflicts both the young and old, male and female. The good news is that it is completely treatable, and some types are even preventable.
There are several types of diabetes: Type 1, Type 2, and gestational. The condition occurs when the body does not make enough insulin and as a result, this causes blood sugar to accumulate in the bloodstream. High blood sugar that stays in the body for too long can cause many problems, such as damage to the kidneys and eyes. It can also make a person have a stroke and cause heart disease. In severe cases, gangrene can occur, and limbs may have to be removed. Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes, occurs when the body does not produce insulin at all. Type 2 occurs when the body produces insulin, but not enough of it.
Signs and Symptoms
There are some prominent tell-tale signs of this condition. A diabetic person may feel thirsty and hungry constantly. Even after finishing a meal, they will feel unsatiated. A diabetic person can experience extreme fatigue and blurry vision. Diabetics have to urinate frequently. Cuts and bruises that are slow to heal is another indication that someone is afflicted with this ailment. If a person feels tingling, numbness, or pain in their hands or feet, they may have Type 2 diabetes. Those with Type 1 usually experience weight loss even though they are eating more.
The treatment depends on the type of diabetes that the person has. Type 1 is mainly treated with a variety of insulins. The insulin can be delivered by various methods. Type 2 is usually treated with a medication that is effective in regulating the body’s blood sugar levels.
While medications and insulin can help control diabetes, it is important that the individual maintains a healthy lifestyle. It is critical that a balanced diet is incorporated into daily life. Avoid sugary beverages and foods, white bread and pasta, and anything with trans fat. Eat more leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits, legumes, nuts, and whole grains. These foods are known as superfoods and contain a lot of nutrients.
